A journey through the true and invented stories of authors from various regions of the world this is Lingua Madre Duemilaventitré. Tales of women no longer foreign in Italy, precious anthology edited by Daniela Finocchi (Editions SEB27) presented on 2 December at 17 in the Foyer of the Teatro Massimo in Cagliari for a new appointment under the banner of Legger_ezza 2023 / Promozione della Lettura – V edition.

Female voices that tell of tragedies and wars, of fear and hunger, bitterness and despair, of injustice and discrimination but also of hope and rebirth, as well as of acceptance and integration, of the possibility of surviving horror and pain, to succeed, with courage and even joy, in reinventing a life. A choral fresco of contemporary, multicultural and multi-ethnic society that acquires a double symbolic value in the recovery of memory and identity through the writing and use of a language, often unknown, in which the authors finally find the words to give shape to thoughts and emotions, to express themselves and to communicate, thus managing to fit in and feel “at home” even in their new homeland, land of landing and election after so many difficult adventures.

A collection of testimonies and stories from which emerge personal and family memories, culture and traditions, customs and customs, echoes of a lost and rediscovered language, along with the carefree childhood and wounds of the soul, at the end of innocence: Lingua Madre Duemilaventitré expresses in the subtitle a wish that is already (almost) reality, in underlining the feeling of belonging but also acceptance, without prejudices and unjustified fears, and solidarity towards those who come from other regions of the planet.

Protagonists of the meeting, coordinated by Marco Zurru – associate professor of Economic Sociology at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Cagliari – two of the authors: Amal Oursana (originally from Morocco) who won the People’s Jury Prize with Fatna and Rahhal and Açelya Yönaç (born in Turkey), third place at the 18th edition of the National Mother Tongue Literary Competition” with Once Upon a Time, Anatolia.

Here is, respectively, the portrait of a couple emigrated to Italy, through the long and difficult process of integration, with concerns for the children and the future, and the delicate and poignant plot around the memories and dreams of a child bride, between the colors, sounds and landscapes of his land, mother and stepmother.

In their stories emerges the richness of facets that characterize the anthology, in which they approach different styles and registers, often dramatic stories but sometimes transfigured in a dreamlike or fantastic, vein of lyricism. A choral work that is also a photograph of Italy today: in a global civilization the stories of women and men living on the five continents somehow belong and touch the strings of each heart, based on sensitivity and the degree of empathy; and be placed in the dimension of listening and respect – even if immersed in a continuous and confused flow of discordant information as in “virtual” reality, between incitements to hatred – allows you to break the wall of silence and indifference and rediscover your humanity.

A plurality of voices to describe the complexity of the present. A feminine look to investigate different contexts, a heterogeneous narrative material, which reflects the personality and experience of the individual authors: «Who relies on female genealogy, who goes in search of an authentic identity, who aspires to redemption in school, in work or in the freedom of his body», we read in the production. Between the lines there are references to current events, to the atrocity of wars and to the ferocity of totalitarian regimes, with the words of the women of Eastern Europe and the testimonies from Iran and various countries where civil rights are ignored and trampled on. A reflection on contemporary migrations as well as on the role of women and the situation of women in society, an opportunity to turn the perspective upside down and try to empathize with the other by themselves, to reflect in the perception that foreigners and refugees have of Western civilization, between mirages of wealth and desire for justice and freedom. In the stories told, the authors reveal a part of themselves, their past, their education as rebellion and aspirations for the future, in a sort of ideal “sisterhood” and «it is as if each of them, at a distance of kilometers, recognizing each other in the common ways and sensibilities, held together another map of the world».

The high school student S.V. goes in search of the finished ball by chance beyond the net of a suburban field, during a football match between friends. The report of the research is entrusted to the thesis of the end of the course compiled by the boy and to the reading he makes of it in class, in front of his companions and a professor of gray and tormented letters. It will be the imaginative chronicle of a quest without surrender, so adventurous as to bewitch the audience for hours. Immersed in its exploration, S.V. will get lost in the wonderful landscapes of an island out of time, coming across remote and forgotten places: labyrinthine woods, an abandoned wagon on a desert land, a service station abandoned for decades, the lake hut of a gruff and lonely boatman, a large house with its verdant estate within which flows a life that makes you think of certain elective affinities. The aimless journey, with the fugitive ball reappearing and relentlessly reappearing, beyond or on the edge of any human consortium, will be a gradual and ruthless inner odyssey, a forced descent into the most austere regions of human history, where he also lives the memory of an eccentric substitute teacher passed for that high school, teacher of evil to live. «Who is S.V.? What did you come to tell us?» asks the gray professor listening, and with him asks the reader enthralled by the epos sung by Capitta in a polyphony of points of view, in the fault between real and unreal, and in a temporal suspension from modern classic.

Saverio Tutino was an Italian partisan. After the war he joined the PCI and, after becoming a journalist, was sent by the party’s press to Paris at the time of the war between France and Algeria and then to Cuba, immediately after the revolution led by Guevara and Castro. Tutino is a man to whom contradictory labels will be imposed: Cuban communist in Italy, while in Cuba he will pass from Italian communist to CIA agent following an article of his. During the years of the Tension Strategy he is labeled as a red conspirator, while the red terrorists threaten him with death. So who is this elusive figure, that others try to frame with definitions sometimes dictated by convenience or wrong expectations? Marongiu, living with the «fear of not finding the words», chases the man Saverio, a restless character, sucked by the whirlpool of history and the perennial search for his place in the world. He does this by interviewing family members, friends, acquaintances, consulting biographies and autograph writings, revealing a character who refuses to conform to the dictates imposed from above, which will lead him to have strong contrasts with the party itself.

Milady e Fred.

Even if it consists of episodes and events that take place with repetition, everyday life can often be complex, unpleasant, difficult to deal with. For this reason, even what happens every day deserves to be analyzed and thoroughly examined, perhaps together with a dear friend, over a beer and some pretzels. And just what they are used to do Milady and Fred, two friends who support and support each other in this life that sometimes, between a break with your partner or a jealous comment too, is able to give strong shoulders. Milady and Fred, besides being the ironic protagonists of this story, represent the many facets of human individuality. Facets that, after all, are very reminiscent of those of each of us.
